Holly Springs Tour
On Friday, April 16, 2010, several members of the Greenfield 'Book Jackets' traveled with Coffee Break Tours to Holly Springs, Mississippi for a Pilgrimage Tour. They arrived in Holly Springs and began the tour of homes with Athenia, a Greek Revival home that was built in 1858. Their next stop was Montrose, the home of the Holly Springs Garden Club, sponsors of the Pilgrimage. They enjoyed a luncheon under large tents set up on the grounds of Montrose. After lunch, they were treated to an organ concert in the beautiful Christ Episcopal Church. This church has been a part of the city of Holly Springs since its incorporation in 1836. They then toured Waltham Place, orginally the home of Kate Freemand Clark, a well known artist from Holly Springs. Adjacent to the home is the Kate Freeman Clark Art Gallery where they viewed many of her canvases and drawings. The group then proceeded across the street to the Church of the Yellow Fever Martyrs' Museum. This church was built in 1841 by the Episcopalians but sold to the Catholics in 1858. During the Yellow Fever Epidemic, which practically killed all the residents of Holly Springs, the Catholic sisters and their priest devoted themselves to caring for the victioms and ultimatedly died of the fever themselves. The group then traveled across town to Cuffawa, the last home on the tour, built in 1832, as a four room log cabin still encased in the walls of the cottage. Afterwards, everyone boarded the tour bus and headed back to Jackson for the buffet at Ryan's restaurant and then homeward bound.
Those members enjoying the beautiful day were: Nina Cash, Camille Essary, Bettye Legons, Cardelle McAdams, Phyllis Shull, Dean Stroud, Brenda Withspoon, Tina Cantrell and husband Ron.
